Victor Rodriguez, Head of Fixed Income
Victor joined Challenger in April 2017 as Head of Fixed Income. Prior to his appointment, he was Head of Asia Pacific Fixed Income at Aberdeen Asset Management based in Singapore from 2014 to 2017. There he led a team of more than 30 investment professionals across the region including Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia. Before locating to Singapore, Victor led the Aberdeen Fixed Income business in Australia. Prior to this, Victor worked for over 13 years at Credit Suisse Asset Management in Australia, where he was the Deputy Head of Fixed Income for three years up to 2009. Victor holds a Bachelor of Economics from Sydney University and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from FINSIA.
Pete Robinson, Head of Investment Strategy
Pete is Head of Investment Strategy for Fixed Income, including responsibility for Fixed Income’s multi strategy credit portfolios, and oversight of investment grade corporate credit and domestic asset backed security investments. From 2007 through 2010, Pete was based in London as a Portfolio Manager at WyeTree Asset Management, a specialist asset manager focused on credit opportunities in residential real estate markets. Prior to joining WyeTree, Pete worked at Challenger Life Company in Sydney with responsibility for their Alternative credit portfolio. Pete graduated with a combined Bachelor of Commerce/Science degree with First Class Honours in Finance from the University of New South Wales and is a CFA Charterholder. Pete has 13 years of investment experience.
David Hoskins, Head of Acquisition Finance
David is responsible for Fixed Income’s acquisition finance portfolios. David has 20 years industry experience in both Australian and European credit markets. David joined Challenger in June 2008. Prior to this, he worked for nine years at the National Australia Bank including five years within NAB’s Credit Restructuring team in Melbourne focusing on the management and rehabilitation of distressed assets; three years in nabCapital’s London Credit Risk Management team responsible for leverage finance and other higher risk transactions; and a further one year for nabCapital Sydney in a relationship management role covering a portfolio of Australian institutional clients across the transportation and industrial sectors. David holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from FINSIA.
Gerard Hargraves, Head of Real Estate Lending
Gerard is responsible for CIP’s Institutional Real Estate lending portfolios. Gerard has 25 years’ experience spanning real estate investment and lending. Gerard joined Challenger in 2010 and has overseen the origination and management of ~$3 billion of commercial real estate loans. Prior to joining Challenger, Gerard spent four years at Fortress Investment Group, after property banking roles at NM Rothschild & Sons (Australia) Limited and Commonwealth Bank of Australia. He also spent eight years in property development, most of this time with Bovis Lend Lease. Gerard holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from University of Queensland and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from FINSIA.
Leila Donnachy, Head of Offshore ABS & Senior Portfolio Manager
Leila is a Senior Portfolio Manager with responsibility for Fixed Income’s offshore Asset-Backed Securities and Alternatives portfolios, as well as lead client portfolio manager for Challenger Life. Leila joined Challenger in January 2012 focusing on securitised credit. Prior to joining Challenger, she was an Associate in Structured Products at Barclays Capital in Sydney and previously at Merrill Lynch in New York. Leila holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from University College London, a Master in Financial Engineering from Columbia University and an MBA from Melbourne Business School.
Stephen Martin, Domestic ABS
Steve is a Senior Portfolio Manager with responsibility for the Australian and New Zealand Asset Backed Securities portfolio. He joined Challenger in 2008 as an analyst in the asset and liquidity management team. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Fixed Income team focused on asset backed structuring and investing. Steve holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree from the University of Sydney. He has 10 years of investment experience.
Justin Voller, Domestic ABS
Justin is a Director in the Treasury team responsible for management of several of Challenger’s whole loan portfolios as well as the origination, structuring and on-going management of private and public market securitisation transactions. Prior to joining Challenger in 2014 Justin had more than 13 years’ experience working in the securitisation industry, including roles at Citigroup Global Markets, Allco Finance Group and Perpetual Corporate Trust, as well as a consultant to originators and funders of securitised asset portfolios. Justin holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws from Bond University and has a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from FINSIA.
Martin Saunders, Domestic ABS
Martin is Senior Portfolio Manager responsible for Asset Backed Securities including management of Challenger’s residential mortgage portfolios and originating and structuring new ABS Investment opportunities. He has over 20 years’ banking and capital markets industry experience. In 2000 Martin was instrumental in the establishment of Pepper Homeloan’s initial funding program and by 2002, he had established a new business that was acquired by Challenger. After joining Challenger he was a key executive in Challenger mortgage business, which by 2007 had grown to be Australia’s largest nonbank residential lender. When Challenger sold the mortgage origination business in 2007 Martin took responsibility to oversee the A$14b of retained mortgages. Martin holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Western Sydney.
Sid Kumar, Acquisition Finance
Sid is a Senior Portfolio Manager in the Fixed Income team with a focus on acquisition finance and high yield credit investments. He has 10 years of experience in this area. Sid joined Challenger in January 2017 after a 6-year investment banking stint with Barclays Capital where he worked across Leveraged Finance Structuring & Underwriting, Debt Advisory and Corporate & Acquisition Financing in BarCap’s Mumbai and Sydney offices. Prior to BarCap, he spent 3 years with ICICI Bank working on acquisition financings, ABS structuring and origination. Sid holds a Bachelor of Computer Engineering degree from Anna University and an MBA from the IIFT School of International Business, New Delhi.
Sybil Tong, Domestic ABS
Sybil is a Graduate Analyst in the Fixed Income team, responsible for providing technical and analytical support to acquisition finance and real estate lending teams. She joined Challenger in December 2017 as a summer Intern, worked in both Challenger Life and Challenger Investment Partners. Prior to that, she worked in various roles at Australia International Trade Association, ANZ and Grant Thornton Australia. Sybil holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and a Master of Commerce from the University of Sydney.
Michael Bors, Corporate Credit
Michael is a Senior Portfolio Manager with responsibility for Investment Grade Corporate Credit portfolios, having joined Challenger in this position in 2012. For a decade prior to this, he was a sell-side Credit Research Analyst in the Commonwealth Bank’s fixed income business in both Sydney and London. The team was consistently rated number one in external surveys for the best research and analysis on the Australian corporate credit market. Michael holds a Bachelor of Business degree from the University of Technology Sydney.
David Bothof, Corporate Credit
David is a Senior Portfolio Manager with responsibility for managing investment grade corporate credit investments and cash portfolios. David has over 12 years investment experience. He joined Challenger in 2007, assisting with management of cash portfolios and analysis of higher yielding opportunities for CIP. From 2005 through to 2007, David was a financial analyst at Macquarie Bank focusing on debt markets research and asset revaluations across financial asset classes. David holds a Bachelor of Business degree from Queensland university of Technology and a Masters of Applied Finance from Macquarie University.
Marthinus Strauss, Corporate Credit and Lending
Marthinus is an Senior Analyst in the CIP Fixed Income team, responsible for providing technical and analytical support to the portfolio managers. He has 18 years of investment experience. Marthinus joined Challenger in 2016 and the CIP team in September, 2017. Prior to this, he worked as a Fixed Income Analyst at Momentum Asset Management and Ashburton Investments in South Africa. Marthinus holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from the North-West University (South Africa) and is a CFA Charter holder.
Jeff Che, Offshore ABS and Alternatives
Jeff joined CIP in November 2018 as an Analyst with a focus on offshore asset backed securities and Alternative investments. He has worked for the past year as a Graduate Engineer at Multiplex and has held various Internship roles since 2016. Jeff holds a Bachelor of Commerce Finance and Civil Engineering (Honours) from University of Sydney.
Kieran Roane, Corporate Credit
Kieran is a Senior Portfolio Manager based in London, with responsibility for Investment Grade Corporate Credit investments. Before joining CIP in February 2017, he was a Corporate Bond Portfolio Manager for 12 years at Investec Asset Management, investing in both Investment Grade and High Yield Bond markets. Prior to joining Investec, Kieran spent six months there working as an analyst on secondment from the FCA. Kieran worked for the FCA for over three years, starting as a graduate trainee and moving on to analyze financial markets and instruments, including CDS and Japanese Financial Institutions. Kieran holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) in Finance from The University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). He also earned his Investment Management Certificate (IMC) and is a CFA Charterholder.
Thomas Mowl, Offshore ABS
Thomas joined the CIP Fixed Income team, based in London, in August 2019 as a Senior Portfolio Manager with a focus on Offshore Asset-Backed Securities. Before joining Challenger, Thomas spent 10 years at WyeTree Asset Management in London where he was a Portfolio Manager investing across US and European Asset-Backed Securities. Thomas holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics from University of Warwick, a Master of Science in Financial Mathematics from Warwick Business School and is a CFA Charterholder.
Berkeley Liu, Corporate & Real Estate Lending
Berkeley joined the CIP Fixed Income team in September 2019 as an Analyst with a focus on high yield credit investments, acquisition finance and real estate. Prior to joining Challenger, Berkeley was an Associate Analyst at Moody’s Investors Service where he completed in-depth fundamental credit analysis of speculative and investment grade issuers. Berkeley also spent two years as a Senior Associate within Macquarie Group Limited, deploying capital across bespoke secured debt and asset finance products. Berkeley completed his Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance from the University of New South Wales.
Shaun Fernando, Real Estate Lending
Shaun joined Challenger in September 2019 as a Portfolio Manager with a focus on CIP’s Institutional Real Estate lending portfolios. Before joining Challenger, Shaun was a Manager at Gresham Partners for 5 years where he supported the Managing and Executive Directors in property origination, transaction due diligence, investment submissions and management and market research. Prior to this Shaun spent 11 years in Finance and Auditing roles with GE Capital and KPMG. Shaun is a qualified Chartered Accountant and holds a Master of Applied Finance from Macquarie University.
Scott Spurling, Offshore ABS
Scott joined the CIP Fixed Income team, based in London, in September 2019 as an Analyst with a focus on Offshore Asset-Backed Securities. Before joining Challenger, Scott spent 1 year at WyeTree Asset Management in London where he provided analytical support across US and European ABS strategies. Scott holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Imperial College London.
